Cry the Beloved Country; Eye-opening

I started reading this book because my high school english 4 teacher had us read the book Things Fall Apart, and her research class was reading this book. Being the nerd I was, and trying to get on her good side, I read both. I felt like I had a connection to this book, because my parents are both South African, and lived in the apartheid era. I got a chance to see a little bit of what it was like for those who lived in the thick of it. “But when that dawn will come, of our emancipation, from the fear of bondage and the bondage of fear, why, that is a secret.” I didn't realize what was the truth behind apartheid South Africa, because the stories I heard from others were centered around Nelson Mandela and his struggles. This book really showed me what happened in South Africa, even in a different time than what my family has been thorough. I started picturing the book as I was reading (I didn't realize there was a movie), and I felt so proud of my family for living and thriving in a time when people like me were not treated equally. This book is a great read for anyone, and it really opens the door to the Apartheid era.
