King of Bones and Ashes; A Magical Turn Through New Orleans
New Orleans, Katrina; thats how this book starts. We meet one of the main characters, Alice, in the midst of Katrina hitting New Orleans, and the impact it has on her witch family. We learn that the coven, the Chanicleer Coven, is trying to stop flooding in the area, but are failing. Alice is a witness to something that causes her to be put in a witch's mental institution, and she has been there since 2005.
There is a quick transition to modern day, with Evanegline, the ex-girlfriend to Alice's older brother; current partner to Nicholas Marin, Alice's father. There are three main witches we get a spotlight on; Evanegline, Alice, and Lisette. These three main women each have elements of their histories that intertwine with one another.
This book is honestly a nice read if you want something that gives you a clear understanding of the people and the setting in the beginning, with a slow pace to set things in without confusing you. Honestly, I used notes, charts, and random scribbles to get everything done, it was a beautiful mess of links and lists. If you're someone who likes a slow build, with a final punch at the ending, take a seat for this book, because Horn definitely delivers.
