Game Changers of the Apocalypse
So, I have gone back to indie reviews, because reading books by authors that aren't really known is really nice. This book was a request by the author. I was a bit apprehensive, because I don't usually read apocalyptic fiction, after reading so many YA fictions that seem to follow the same plot. This book was quite different.
This book started with a broken engagement, and the main character, Greg, dealing with his life basically falling apart. While his life is falling apart, the apocalypse strikes. How, we don't actually know. The poor man must live in a world that is devoid of people, except for a surprising character turning up. The pair of them have to handle the stress and insanity of life after the end, and trying to figure out what has happened to London.
One of my takes of the book was that the plot was quite slow and tangled at the beginning, and I was reading the book, not listening to an audiobook version. Going from snippets of Greg's painful experience to random moments of the world ending was something that I did not enjoy. There was a moment where Greg was in the middle of London, and in the next moment was in a barn, and I was truly confused as to the setting and state of the book. This may be because of the degrading mental state of Greg as the "world's last person."
Another opinion I had of the book was that I did not like Polly, Greg's fiancee. I understand that planning a wedding is highly stressful and having a partner that is not helping is really not right; but randomly breaking up and then making their life horrid after the world ends is really something else. She may just be a figment of his imagination, and a part of the insanity, but then Greg is really hurting himself with the idea of Polly. My conclusion to this is that, while I did not enjoy the book's slow pace at the beginning, I would recommend a full read-through, because it does get better as the book carries on.
